PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Might Hit League of Legends’ Active User Numbers

That's if the developer plays its cards right according to creator Brendan Greene.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

Brendan Greene aka “PlayerUnknown” is having the time of his life currently. His Early Access Battle Royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which was developed with Bluehole, has 882,166 players currently active and a peak of 968,512 players today alone. That handily beats games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive which have reigned supreme on Steam for years.

While the game will be coming to Xbox One later this year and receiving more updates, Greene is showing no signs of settling. Speaking to Games Industry International, Greene says, “Our sales curves are just going up. They’re not slowing down. I’m still waiting for that plateau, and it’s just not happening yet.”

He also hints at trying to surpass League of Legends in terms of monthly active users. “I just look at League of Legends. 100 million active users a month, I think, something stupid like that? If we play our cards right, maybe we can get to that level of users.”

Of course, the number of active daily players for League of Legends is unknown since the game isn’t on Steam. That being said, it’s a lofty goal for Greene. Given that he has no plans of increasing the base $30 price of the game, which could change over time, it may not be impossible.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is also slated to release on Xbox One later this year via the Game Preview program.
