Destiny 2 Director Defends New Shader System As “Ongoing Reward For Playing”

Luke Smith wants you to go back to planets or raids for shaders.

Bungie has faced a lot of flak since the launch of Destiny 2 with players being upset about the new shader system. Meant as the means for colouring one’s armour, shaders can now be applied to individual pieces. Unfortunately, they also function as one-time consumables and are destroyed once removed from armour.

Since this is a huge step back from the previous game, many fans believed that this was meant to encourage purchasing Bright Engrams from which shaders could drops. Director Luke Smith took to Twitter however and broke down why Bungie made the changes it did. As per Smith, you’ll receive lots of shaders after hitting level 20 and believes they’ll be farmed like any other end-game reward. He essentially wants players to revisit planets or raids just to acquire more shaders.

If you’ve heard any complaints from Year 1 Destiny about constantly receiving Chatterwhite as a reward for completing Vault of Glass, you’ll know that next to no one has wanted to grind raids for a shader, that too on multiple pieces of armour.

Regardless, what are your thoughts on the changes to the shader system in Destiny 2? Let us know in the comments below.
