Minecraft on New Nintendo 3DS Will Not Receive Better Together Update

But it will be getting local multiplayer and 3D support.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced what might probably be the biggest exercise in cross platform engagement with the upcoming Minecraft: Better Together update. Said update essentially unifies all the disparate versions of the game across mobile, PC, Mac, and consoles (sans PS4, because Sony wants no part of cross platform play) into a unified entity, complete with cross platform play.

So- where does that leave Minecraft on New Nintendo 3DS, which was announced at the Nintendo Direct earlier this week? Apparently, it will not be getting this update, a developer confirmed on Twitter.

That said, the 3DS version still seems fairly impressive for what it is- it will support bigger world sizes than even the Wii U version did, and it will be stereoscopic 3D enabled. Not just that, but it also sounds like the glaring omission of multiplayer will be addressed in a later update, which will add at least local multiplayer to the game.

You can get the 3DS version of Minecraft off of the eShop now (a retail release is due later). Minecraft is also available on – okay, wait for it – PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Windows 10, PCs, and Mac.
