Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Outperformed In Japan by Ultra Street Fighter 2, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Pokken DX at Launch

The newest game in the series has not done well...

We already reported sales from Japan earlier today, and when we did, we took note of the poor performance of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. However, the true extent of just how badly the game has performed may be lost on some.

As NeoGAF users have pointed out, the game has sold just a tenth of what Marvel vs Capcom 3 sold upon launch (and a tenth of what Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 sold in Japan at launch as well). Admittedly, those two releases had two SKUs- but even if we consider just one SKU, the PS3 one, the game has sold less than an eighth of what Marvel vs Capcom 3 sold upon launch.

As already pointed out, it was also outsold by Pokken Tournament DX by a factor of 1:7 (and a factor of almost 1:9 for the original, Wii U Pokken release). But, in what is perhaps the most egregious case of the game’s underperformance, it managed to sell only a half of what Ultra Street Fighter 2 on the Switch sold- which is especially exacerbated because a) Ultra Street Fighter 2 was an overpriced release of a 20 year old game that has had multiple, cheaper, better received releases over the years (while Infinite is a brand new game), and b) the Switch install base at the time was about an eighth of the PS4 install base right now.

With the game underperforming in the UK, too, hopefully Capcom can pull it back together in the US- otherwise, for now, even the what I thought was a muted projection of 2 million units sales for the game seems hugely unlikely for now.
