Tekken 7 Hits 2 Million Copies Sold

Tracking way ahead of expectations, too.

Bandai Namco’s Tekken series returned to consoles after a long hiatus this year with Tekken 7, the latest entry in the long running 3D fighting game saga. Tekken remains the highest selling fighting game series of all time- so of course, expectations from the new game were high as well.

Bandai Namco expected 2.1 million copies of the game to be sold worldwide by the end of its financial year, which is on March 31 next year- and the game has already hit 2 million copies sold worldwide, series producer Katsuhiro Harada confirmed on Twitter. This means that it’s got the next five and a half months to sell 100,000 copies worldwide- a target that, something tells me it will hit easily.

At 2 million copies sold, this also makes Tekken 7 one of the higher selling fighters this gen. It is ahead of Street Fighter 5, which has sold 1.7 million copies worldwide, in spite of launching a year and a half earlier, and ahead of Nintendo’s ARMS. On the other hand, it is still trailing Mortal Kombat XSuper Smash Bros., and presumably, Injustice 2.

Nonetheless, given how strong the core game is, and how positive the word of mouth surrounding it is, it is likely that it will keep continuing selling for a long time to come.
