Negative buzz regarding loot boxes and microtransactions weren't enough to derail the sequel.

Despite months of negative buzz with microtransactions and loot boxes, not to mention a drop in UK physical sales from its predecessor, Monolith Productions’ Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is doing pretty well on Steam. The game has sold a little over 400,000 units for PC users as per Steam Spy and since it’s only been out for 7 days, it’s still a pretty positive sales impact.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War’s critical reception has been similarly pleasing with reviewers praising the game’s open world and fortress assaults. Loot boxes were described as being unnecessary for progression though the end-game, Shadow Wars, was found to be repetitive and grindy.

It remains to be seen how the game will sell over the next few months especially with other big names like Call of Duty: WW2, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus and Star Wars Battlefront 2 to release soon.
