Xbox First Party Games Could Eventually Show Up on PlayStation and Other Consoles, Phil Spencer Says

What an odd thing to say before the launch of a new $500 console...

It has been clear for a while that Microsoft as a company is transitioning away from traditional products to services- and this is reflecting on the Xbox division too, with their emphasis on MAUs and Xbox Live subscriptions, as well as GaaS style titles, over all else.

Now, it seems like Microsoft is willing to consider going one step further- much like with Windows Phone, where they eventually put their services and products on competing platforms iOS and Android, it sounds like Microsoft might be willing to put their first party Xbox games on other consoles- the PS4, specifically, was name dropped.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed that he has been given the mandate by Microsoft to reach gamers on any and all devices- not just Xbox. In a sense, we are starting to see this with Microsoft pushing Minecraft on just about every device there is, as well as Microsoft’s push for cross platform play- but eventually, it sounds like Spencer would be open to putting Microsoft’s big franchise games on PS4.

This would be hugely interesting to see- though it does beg the question of just what the point of an Xbox console would be at that point in time (to return to the Windows Phone analogy, do remember that the platform ended up dying out). It also beggars the question- just why would Spencer say something as potentially controversial as this on the eve of the launch of a brand new, $500 console?
