Final Fantasy 15 is yet another high profile title that supports the Xbox One X. The RPG is an interesting title to analyze primarily because it offers three modes to both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X owners. In High mode, both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions run at a dynamic resolution. However, there is a difference. The PS4 Pro version uses checkerboard rendering to achieve a resolution of up to 3360×1890. Whereas on the Xbox One X, a checkerboard rendering solution is not used and a resolution of up to 3200×1800 is achieved. Despite the lower pixel count on the Xbox One X, the image quality is far better compared to the PS4 Pro. This is due to the fact that the Xbox One X uses a straight native resolution buffer, unlike the Pro which uses a checkerboard solution.

Performace during the High mode is largely locked at 30 frames per second on both consoles. However, the Xbox One X is free from any sort of frame pacing issues across all the modes. In the Lite mode, both versions render at a native 1080p at unlocked frame rates. The frame rate is all over the place in this mode and a true 60fps is never achieved. In Steady mode, the frame rate is locked to 30fps at a native 1080p resolution.

So as you can notice, this is a rather strange title on the Xbox One X. Ideally, the Xbox One X should have been able to render much better image quality and a higher performance but other than better texture filtering, shadow detail and slightly improved frame rates, the differences between the two are quite miniscule.

Overall, this is quite disappointing as we were expecting much more from the Xbox One X build. What is there is undoubtedly quite good but the Xbox One X is more than capable to achieve even better results.
