Release Date: March 20, 2018
Attack on Titan 2 is an upcoming hack and slash title based on the anime property of the same name and is a follow up from the first Attack on Titan game, also produced and published by Omega-Force and Koei Tecmo. The story of the game will follow the second season of the anime and will bring visual improvements to PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X users. The title is set to launch in the west on March 20th on all major platforms, with the PlayStation Vita getting a Japan release only.
Development
There has been a surprisingly little amount of coverage or statements given surrounding the development of Attack on Titan 2. The prior game landed with a mostly solid 74 on Metacritic, citing the usual issues with an Omega Force crossover game like repetitive combat, while praising the Omni-Directional Maneuvering Gear.
In an interview with Polygon, producer Hisashi Koinuma and Omega Force manager Hideo Suzuki would drop a few tidbits, such as how they intend this entry to provide a bigger challenge, making the Titans a bigger threat than they were in the first game, which was designed with anime fans in mind as well.
It was revealed then as well that the game would be following up on the original title by adapting the story of Season 2 of the anime into the story of the game, supervised by the original manga creators at Kodansha.
Story
The game picks up where the first one left off, and models itself after the Season 2 arc of the anime of the same name. Wall Rose has been breached and Titans are coming in, leaving the 104th to fight off the titans while the civilians get away. The team also struggles to understand the mystery of the Titans found within the walls that protect the people and new kinds of Titans that keep appearing.
The game will also divulge some side stories and post series content, supervised closely by the original writers to make sure that the story segments the game adds are canon and make sense within universe.
Gameplay
While there’s not much in the way of details on how the gameplay might be switched up from the original Attack on Titan game, odds are good that we can expect it to be based off of the original game to a significant degree. As opposed to facing off against numberless waves of foes as most Omega Force titles would have you do, the game makes heavy use of the Omni-Directional Maneuvering Gear to have the player go up against beastly Titans, attacking different parts of their bodies and bringing them down through some stunning acrobatic feats. The game will still try to divide your attention, much like a Warriors game would do with unforeseen events or characters in danger, but Attack on Titan will have you swooping in to help fellow Squadmates as they engage their own Titans, or just by asking you to battle multiple Titans at a time in general.
The team has stated that they intend to make the Titans more intimidating with Attack on Titan 2, and that it’s really more a matter of AI then scale. The team wishes to bring a level of unpredictability to the Titans as well as leveraging some of the different Titans seen in Season 2 as separate enemy types, to improve variety.
Town Life will also return to the game, serving as a break between the missions, where players can use their time in a variety of ways. This too is said to be expanded upon for this game. players can choose to develop their relationships with another team member, or participate in training or challenge missions to further develop their character. On top of the over 30 playable characters in the game, there is a custom character option the player can develop all on their own and dress as they see fit. The custom character will have access to stories from both anime seasons.
Characters
The game will include over 30 playable characters and even more as NPCs within the game. To cover them all is beyond the scope of this Wiki as not nearly all of them have major plot significance. But let’s run down a few that do have some major plot significance.
Eren Jaeger is the main protagonist of the series, and member of the Scout Regiment and formerly of the 104th Cadet Corps. The impulsive young man has had a grudge on Titans ever since he lost his mother to them, but he’s a selfless man who cares for his friends and comrades in the Scout Regiment. He has the ability to transform into an Intelligent Titan, which lets him somewhat command the colossal power of the form at the cost of fighting the bloodlust of the form.
Mikasa Ackerman is a sister figure to Eren, with the two of them living together as children following the murder of her parents, before the fall of Wall Maria. While she may come across as cold, it’s clear that the young woman cares for Eren, following him to the Scout Regiment to continue protecting him. The red scarf she wears is a precious keepsake of her rescue from the people who killed her parents, when a young Eren liberated her.
Armin Arlert is a childhood friend of Mikasa and Eren who follows the two of them into the Scout Regiment. He’s curious, if introverted young man who was interested in the world beyond the walls from a young age. While his low-self esteem keep him from realizing it, the team considers him, his strategic cunning and intellect to be invaluable.
Ymir is a member of the Scout Regiment, a mysterious woman. An untrusting person by nature and her experience being raised by a cult, there is a hidden kindness that she has been known to show from time to time.
Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover are close friends from childhood and former part of the Scout Regiment. Reiner is the charismatic and reliable one while everybody always considered Bertholdt as rather quiet. The two of them seem to be hiding a secret and have their own agenda.
