Obsidian’s Upcoming RPG Won’t Have Microtransactions

They also retain full creative freedom.

Take Two has already confirmed that it intends to double down on microtransactions, and move forward with implementing them in every game possible; simultaneously, we also have confirmation that the next RPG from beloved studio Obsidian, behind such cult classic hits as Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, is going to be published by Take Two’s Private Division label.

So, put two and two together, and… what does that imply? Will the new Obisidian game also have microtransactions? Well, calm down, because it will not. Speaking in a forum post, Obsidian said that their game will be microtransaction-free, and that they are getting full creative control of the new game.

“Far from ‘pushing’ us to put anything—microtransactions or otherwise—into our game, Private Division has been incredibly supportive of our vision, our creative freedom, and the process by which we work to make RPGs. They have been fantastic partners, and we are extremely excited to work with them through release, to put what we know is going to be an amazing game into as many hands as possible,” they said.

So that’s good news- it sounds like we’ll get a pretty good old school style cRPG (the stuff Obsidian is best at) without any of the trappings of a modern AAA game. Couldn’t have asked for a better outcome, really.
