PS4 Pro Finally Getting System Wide Supersampling With Firmware Update 5.50

At long last, supersampling!

Posted By | On 02nd, Feb. 2018

The next major firmware update for the PS4 will be 5.50, which will be out some time in early Spring- and as always, Sony has started beta testing for this update, to iron out any kinks it may have before it gets pushed to the larger PlayStation audience.

And now, details leaking from the beta seem to indicate exactly what we can expect from this update. Most of the new functionality is minor stuff, like the ability to clear all notifications, or to filter your game library (at last!), but the big addition here is that the update apparently adds system level supersampling to the PS4 Pro at last.

Supersampling, in case you didn’t know, is when a console renders an image at a higher resolution, and then downsamples it to a lower one- which means that even PS4 Pro owners without 4K TVs would be able to see higher quality images for Pro enhanced games.

This is a feature the Xbox One X already offers- the Pro has so far not had a native solution for this, only offering it on a per game basis. This new firmware update finally changes that- now we just wait for it to be available to everyone. Hopefully soon.
