Capybara Finding It Challenging To Get Below Running At 4K/60FPS On Xbox One X

Will the latest Capybara game hit 4K@60, or will it hit below?

Perhaps you’ve had the chance to enjoy the work of indie studio Capybara Games. The Toronto based studio is following up their well regarded Critter Crunch and Super Time Force with Below, an action adventure rouge like first announced at E3 2013.

While one might look at the pixel stylings of Below and think it’s gotta be a cakewalk to get the Xbox One X version running at full 4K with 60 Frames Per Second. However, according to studio President and Co-Founder Nathan Vella, apparently it’s a harder task that one might think.

In an interview given to Eurogamer, Vella stated that it was challenging, and that the team was going all out to try to make it work. “We’re so used to everything in games being up close. How close can we put the camera to a character? We want to be able to see their ear hairs if they’re in third-person, or we want to be able to see the scratches on their guns if it’s an FPS. For us to go the opposite direction, quite often people think that’s easier to do. Of course they’re going to do 4K / 60 frames per second, that’s easy! But we’re doing so much to make that work and it is actually extremely technically challenging to do so,” Vella stated.

Perhaps the fact the team originally built the game with 1080P and 30 fps in mind means the engine isn’t playing so nice, but it’s hard to say for sure.
