Detroit: Become Human Goes Gold

Detroit: Become Human is one step away from final release.

Quantic Dream and David Cage’s upcoming science fiction narrative adventure game Detroit: Become Human has gone gold, Sony has announced today. This means that development on the game is complete, and the code on the master disc is finalized, ready to be duplicated for mass production.

Detroit: Become Human looks to be Quantic Dream’s most ambitious production yet—it’s the first time that the player seems to get control over how the story plays out, rather than interacting with a story that is already decided. Thematically, Cage is tackling some really ambitious themes here, including what it truly means to become human (as the name should have given away… Cage isn’t known for its subtlety). Apparently, the shooting for the game entailed 300 actors over 2 years, and over 37,000 animations that made it into the game.

I do hope all of this will result in a better game—conceptually, what Cage does is fantastic (as evidenced by Telltale and Dontnod games). It’s just that, so far, he has faltered in execution. It looks like Detroit will be the game to change that when it launches next month, exclusively on the PS4.
