Nintendo has made a killing with the NES Classic Mini and SNES Classic Mini, miniature recreations of their classic consoles with some of their greatest games emulated and included on board. They look set to continue that run with the N64 Classic Mini this year, and now, it looks like Sony may want a piece of that pie too.
Speaking with Mantan Web, PlayStation boss John Kodera noted that leveraging “past assets” is something Sony is always considering, and that a “PlayStation Classic” console is in active consideration at the company. “Our company is always digging up past assets. I think there are various ways to do (a classic console). There have been discussions happening (within the company) on what kind of ways are there.”
With Sony’s PlayStation Classics initiative having lost all steam ever since the PS4 hit the market, it’s not like they would be competing with their own offerings or anything here- I think this could be big, if they did it. The big problem I see is that most of PS1’s big games, such as Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy 7, and Tekken, are all third party titles- but I am sure they could make it work somehow. I hope they do.
