Kingdom Hearts 3 Exhibition in Tokyo Causes Long Lines

Kingdom Hearts 3's marketing exhibition in Japan was more popular than expected.

Once, long ago, new game releases in Japan caused long lines, often going on for blocks, as people tried to get their hands on the newest Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. By and large, that has stopped in recent years- most people have moved on to mobile gaming, and the people still playing console games also have the safety net of digital purchases.

But the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3 on PS4 in Japan (the Xbox One version isn’t releasing there) may generate the kind of excitement that new non-Nintendo releases used to be known for back in the day. In anticipation of the game’s release next January, Square Enix held a marketing demonstration for the game, including picture books, trailers, and collector’s leaflets for fans distributed for free,  at the Metro Promenade within the Shinjuku station of the Marunouchi Line.

Except it was a roaring success- the line for the leaflets was so massive, Square had to suspend distribution, and promise more information on when they may have more to share for the following day! It sounds like Kingdom Hearts 3 may be the rare non-Nintendo console game that ends up doing extremely well even in Japan.
