Nintendo Switch Was Responsible For 18% of Nvidia’s Revenue Last Year

So almost a fifth of all of Nvidia's revenue last year came from Switch.

Nintendo Switch

It looks like the Switch was a win not just for Nintendo, who saw a return to profitability, high sales, and mainstream relevance on the back of the release of their little hybrid console, but also Nvidia, who provide the SoC for the system by way of the Tegra X1.

According to The Motley Fool, the Nintendo Switch accounted for a staggering 18%- or almost a fifth- of Nvidia’s revenue in fiscal year 2018 (from April 2017 to March 2018), amounting to a figure of $972 million. It’s a resounding endorsement of the partnership between Nvidia and Nintendo (which both companies have indicated they want to see extended over the long term), and possibly will see them back down from their previously hardlined “no console” stance.

Of course, $972 million, while a huge number- it’s almost a billion dollars- it’s still just a small part of Nvidia’s overall revenue, which comes from a variety of sources. It’s also important to remember that this is revenue, not profit, so the amount Nvidia actually saw from this number may be lower.

Still, it’s a significant enough fraction that you have to assume Nvidia will continue to invest in new SoCs Nintendo can use for Switch consoles- good news for everyone all around.
