Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Story Details Revealed, ‘You’re Not Driven By The Assassin’s Creed’

Odyssey is going to be set long before the brotherhood was created, and that's going to have repercussions on how you play.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

The fact that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the first game in the series’ chronology, set 400 years before even Origins, has raised a lot of questions. After all, Origins was the game that described how the titular brotherhood of assassins was formed, how the creed they followed was given birth- if we’re playing a game so long before any of that even happened, what sort of an effect will that have on the story?

GamingBolt had a chance to speak with the game’s director Scott Phillips at E3, and we posed that question to him, and the answer we got was quite intriguing, to say the least. Apparently, the effect of the game’s placement in the timeline is that we, as players, are not going to be governed or bound at all by the creed that we’ve been following as assassins in the series for so long.

“We are not directly connected in terms of the story of Origins,” Phillips told us. “We are 400 years before Assassin’s Creed Origins. So the brotherhood hasn’t been created, which allows us to focus the story on choice. You’re not driven by the Assassin’s Creed, it’s your own internal creed that you created. And the world feeds that back to you if you’re killing people, or lying, or stealing. The world is going to send mercenaries against you so you’ll feel that those choices have an impact. And then your choices within the story as well will have a big impact. Do we have a present day? Yes, we do have a present day, and we’re continuing that sort of philosophical “order versus chaos,” structure that’s always been there in Assassin’s Creed. And there’s a lot of other stuff for fans. I think people that dig into the game and love Assassin’s Creed, will love Odyssey.”

That sounds interesting, because things that have never been allowed in Assassin’s Creed games before – such as killing civilian NPCs, for instance – are going to be allowed in Odyssey, making it almost like a GTA-style game. There’s a wanted system in place as well, so that definitely makes things interesting. But that’s only one of the many new things Odyssey will be introducing to the series- read about what else is new in our feature here.
