Assassin’s Creed Publisher Looking to Add Multiplayer Back to the Series

This is a good idea, I just hope it doesn’t detract from the campaigns’ quality.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed had multiplayer for a while, but it’s something we’ve seen completely removed from the franchise in the wake of Assassin’s Creed Unity. Unity, if you remember, had co-op missions as a big selling point. You will also remember Unity was a complete disaster from the technical perspective at launch, so you can hardly blame Ubisoft from stepping back from including multiplayer in subsequent games.

The thing, though, is that Unity was hardly the first game in the series to do multiplayer. Games like Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood were notable for their inclusion of multiplayer modes too, and they’re among the most beloved ones in the series. So in a sense, this was like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

However, in the future, Ubisoft could add multiplayer back to the franchise. Speaking to Game Informer, Ubisoft’s chief creative officer Serge Hascoet said that multiplayer is very important for the “social component of gaming” that Ubisoft likes to emphasize, and that it would be something the publisher would be looking at.

“We have many technologies, so it’s case by case, but Assassin’s Creed has no multiplayer mode, and that is very important for the social aspect of gaming, so we are looking for that,” he said.

I’m all for them doing this, because Assassin’s Creed multiplayer was pretty novel and great— I just hope it doesn’t come at the expense of the fantastic single player campaigns that the games have had over the last few entries, is all.
