Wii U Sales in Japan No Longer Being Tracked by Famitsu

The final tally rests at 3.3 million units sold in the country.

The Wii U was an abysmal flop, among the biggest mainstream failures released by either Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo ever. Everyone wants to forget about it and move on from it as quickly as possible (including Nintendo themselves, as evidenced by them having moved so swiftly to replace it with the Switch, and pillage its library for its best games to put on their new console).

That presumably includes Enterbrain Famitsu, who track sales of video game hardware and software in Japan, as well, because they announced that they will no longer report on Wii U sales going forward. Rival tracking firm Media Create had stopped reporting on Wii U sales last year, so this means we will no longer be betting sales stats for Wii U from Japan at all.

The final tally for the Wii U, for those who may have a morbid curiosity for this sort of thing, is 3.3 million units sold in Japan (which is about a quarter of what it sold worldwide). And that’s where it will stay.

At least, as Nintendo points out, the Wii U’s failure led to their success with the Switch, if nothing else.
