Shadow of War Developer Monolith Productions’ Next Game Will Use The Nemesis System, As Per Job Ad

Monolith Productions will seemingly be bringing back the acclaimed Nemesis system for their next project.

Middle Earth Shadow of War_12

Monolith Productions’ Assassin’s Creed-esque open world action adventure titles, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, have been two of the most surprising hits of this generation, along with being two of the best games being based on the Lord of the Rings license.

One of the primary reasons the games get such high praise is because of its Nemesis system, a unique, fresh mechanic that encompasses the entire game and allows players to have experiences that feel personal and unique to each playthrough. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the Nemesis system is one of the best new mechanics we’ve seen in a game in years, and it’s frankly a little surprising that we haven’t seen other games trying to ape what Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War did with it.

Well, regardless of whether or not other games do it, Monolith Productions themselves are definitely going to get the most out of it- or so a new job listing (spotted by Game Watcher) indicates. The studio has put up an ad looking for a Principal Technical Artist, which states that the person in the position will be “creating believable human characters that will interact with the player in our next Nemesis system based game.”

That’s really as direct as they can get about it. Leaves no room for guesswork. If that weren’t enough, there’s some interesting wording in a separate job ad (this one spotted by PC Games N) that also hints at the kind of procedural mechanics that the Nemesis system uses. The listing, which is for a Senior Game Writer, mentions that one of the applicant’s responsibilities will be to “identify problems in procedural narrative systems, propose creative solutions, and work with relevant stakeholders to implement them.”

The safe bet would be to assume that this is all for a sequel to Shadow of War- and I can totally see that happening. There is an outside chance that they could be working on something unrelated to Middle-Earth, while still making use of the Nemesis system, but I’d still put my money on a Shadow of War sequel.

Either way, stay tuned to GamingBolt, and we’ll keep you updated on any new info that comes our way about this.
