Battlefield 5’s German “War Story” is “Not A Hero Story”, Says DICE

It’s a sensitive topic, so it’s good to see they’re at least trying to handle it with some tact.

Battlefield 5

Battlefield 5 will have what DICE are calling “war stories” for its single player component. Similar to Battlefield 1, there will be multiple war stories, each focusing on a different combatant side in the war. And yet, it’s the German story, which is due to launch shortly after the game itself is out, that could be a bit controversial. Playing “their side” of the story in the Second World War, under Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, could be a bit distasteful.

Speaking to Eurogamer, DICE Director Daniel Berlin spoke about “The Last Tiger”, which is the German episode, emphasizing that it is not a “hero’s story”.

“With Battlefield 1 we got a lot of feedback that it’d be nice to see a German perspective, so that was in our back pocket,” he said. “All actions have consequences, even in war, so that’s an ongoing theme throughout the whole thing. And I don’t want to spoil anything, but I hope that mantra helps you understand some of what I mean when I say [The Last Tiger is] not a hero story. It’s really about this tank crew going to war in this crazy machine and they start to actually question why they fight.”

It’s an interesting angle to approach the whole problem from, that’s for sure, but who knows if DICE will be able to pull it off properly? Even the most accomplished of Hollywood directors, for example, often have trouble handing the subject matter with the requisite sensitivity. Let’s hope DICE has better luck.

Battlefield 5 launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 20. If you want to learn more about the war stories in the game, check out the trailer for Battlefield 5 that showed us more of them.
