Sony has been sending out notifications to customers informing them that Chicago’s 9 per cent Amusement Tax will be levied on PlayStation services, in compliance with the city’s taxing changes, starting November 14. This will affect digital services on PlayStation and will be included in all PS Store transactions (via US Gamer).
That includes PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now, PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Music, PlayStation Video On Demand, and PlayStation Video Live Events. So if, for instance, you’re looking to purchase a one month subscription for PS Plus, you’re going to have to pay a $0.89 on top of the base $9.99 fee- if you’re in Chicago, of course. Apparently, local taxes are going to be levied on PlayStation subscriptions elsewhere as well, including New York City.
Of course, PlayStation isn’t the only service being affected by the 9 per cent tax, and others such as Netflix, Xbox Live, Spotify, and Apple have all had to enforce it as well. While the likes of Netflix, Spotify, and Apple have filed lawsuits against the tax’s enforcement, PlayStation seems to be complying.
