EA Motive Designer’s Video Compares Red Dead Redemption 2’s Input Lag With Other Recent AAA Titles

Demonstrating the slow response time in Rockstar's latest when compared to the likes of Spider-Man, Assassin's Creed, and Uncharted.

Red Dead Redemption 2

In spite of its incredible commercial success and all the praise Red Dead Redemption 2 has been getting from critics and a large number of players, it’s still proving to be a somewhat divisive title. A lot of players have taken issue with some things in the game, and one such thing is what have been called by many its lumbering controls.

The response time from when you input a command on your controller to when Arthur does in-game what you want him to do has been noted by several players to be quite slow, resulting in a game that they feel is just slow and unresponsive in general. Now, EA Motive designer Dan Lowe has recorded and uploaded a video on YouTube, which you can view below, that compares the input response time in Red Dead Redemption 2 with other recent third person titles, including Spider-Man, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Destiny 2.

Lowe’s video finds that the response time is significantly lower in Red Dead Redemption 2 than all the other games he’s looked at, with it taking 11 frames to respond in any way to input via the controls, which is almost twice as much as the next slowest game, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which takes 6 frames to respond. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, meanwhile, requires four frames, Spider-Man requires three, and Destiny 2 seems to be the most responsive, requiring just one frame.

This is something that has been noticed by players across the board, of course, regardless of how they feel about the game in general. While those who loved the game didn’t find it to be much of an issue (myself included), others clearly feel different, and honestly, I can at least see why. I guess it’ll be interesting to see whether this is something Rockstar decides to fix, at least marginally, through patches, or if they feel this is something that sticks to their vision for the game.
