After years of fervent anticipation and speculationMortal Kombat 11 was finally officially revealed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developers NeatherRealm Studios at The Game Awards last night, with a typically gory and violent trailer that sent all Mortal Kombat fans into a tizzy across the world. Now, the developers have shared a few more details on what’s looking like an important mechanic in the upcoming fighter, through a recently sent out press release.

We’re talking about the Custom Character Variation System, which will allow players to personalize existing characters and customize their movesets. Players will be allowed to create custom variations of characters in the game’s roster, and will be able to give them unique attacks and moves. How many of the game’s modes the character variation system will be available in, and whether these personalized variations are something you can take into competitive play isn’t something that NeatherRealm have talked about yet, but we can expect more information on this to be unveiled at the game’s community reveal event in a little over a month from now, on January 17.

Meanwhile, Ed Boon, creative director at NeatherRealm and the man behind the Mortal Kombat franchise, also gave an interesting statement on the new system, and on the game’s reveal in general. “It’s exciting to finally announce Mortal Kombat 11 and showcase what the team has been working on,” said Boon. “Our Custom Character Variation System opens up an infinite amount of options for players to personalize their favorite fighters. We can’t wait until January when we’ll be showing more of the game.”

Mortal Kombat 11 launches on April 23, 2019 for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
