Last night at The Game Awards, Obsidian Entertainment unveiled their new sci-fi RPG, called The Open Worldsbut other than a short trailer, we really didn’t get to see much of the game itself. Well, for those of you who’re craving some actual, meaty gameplay footage, there’s good news. Game Informer recently put up a video, which you can view below, that takes a pretty deep dive into actual gameplay, with 15 minutes of footage from the game.

It’s looking predictably amazing, with heavy shades of Fallout: New Vegas, with sci-fi elements and what’s looking so far like pretty humourous writing added on top for additional flavour. The visual pallet is looking impressively vibrant, though not the most technically polished. Plenty of footage of dialogue options, NPC interactions, exploration, and combat is shown. Combat is looking particularly interesting- players can go about it in four ways. They can go in guns blazing, be more tactical about it, utilize stealth, or try to skip combat entirely through dialogue and other methods.

In combat, there’s also an intriguing mechanic that functions a bit like VATS from Fallout. It doesn’t pause time, but slows it down, and in this duration you can take aim at enemies or any weak points they may possibly have to deal more damage. It runs on a draining meter, and if you move about or attack while time has been slowed down, the meter drains faster. A little bit of melee combat is also shown, while in dialogue, you can also select clearly labeled “Dumb” options to add a bit of humour to the proceedings on your own.

All of which is to say that it’s looking excellent. Take a look at the video below if you’re interested in the game. The Outer Worlds launches in 2019 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
