Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a marvellous game, but as I noted in my review of it, it is not perfect. One of its most egregious shortcomings and pitfalls is something that has traditionally been the bane of Nintendo experiences—the online functionality.
Put simply, the game does away with the For Fun and For Glory delineation that previous games in the series had, which separated unranked games with more relaxed rules from ranked online play with competitive rulesets. This means that players simply aren’t guaranteed of finding the kind of experience or game they want to find online, since matchmaking appears to be utterly random.
Fans of the game are not happy with this, and a fair few of them seem to be calling for this problem to be fixed, including prominent figures from the Smash competitive community. You can check a couple of these tweets from these players for yourself below.
Maybe addressing the shortcomings of the online functionality can be something that the game’s first patch, announced for next week, can look at addressing?
