“I’d Be Surprised If The PS5 Were Not Backwards Compatible” – NPD Analyst

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella is confident that the PS5 will feature backwards compatibility with PS4 games.

While Sony have been wildly successful in many areas with the PS4 this generation (many would argue that these are the areas that matter the most), one of the things they have been criticized for is not supporting backwards compatibility with their system. Those criticisms have only gotten more prominent over the last couple years or so, as direct rivals Microsoft have pushed extra hard for their backwards compatibility initiative on the Xbox One.

However, there have been reports that have suggested that the PS5 will end up having backwards compatibility, and that is something that NPD analyst Mat Piscatella agrees with as well. Recently, while speaking in an exclusive interview with GamingBolt, Piscatella said that he expects the PS5 to have backwards compatibility for the PS4’s library.

“I’d be surprised if the PS5 were not backwards compatible with PS4 content, and Sony already has a streaming solution in market with PlayStation Now,” Piscatella told GamingBolt. “It wouldn’t surprise me if both PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox took this type of approach, although I’m sure they’d do so in slightly different ways with different messaging.”

The PS5 featuring backwards compatibility is something that a few people have said they see happening. Recently, industry veteran Marc-André Jutras told GamingBolt that he expects both, the PS5 and the next Xbox to have backwards compatibility- read more on that through here. Meanwhile, our full interview with Mat Piscatella will be going live soon, so stay tuned for that.
