Cancelled Star Wars Game Would Have Been Like Uncharted, Says Rogue One Writer

The co-writer of the 2016 film is furious about the game's cancellation.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 - Obi-Wan Kenobi

The most popular (and rightly so) opinion people seem to have about EA in recent days is that they’ve managed their Star Wars exclusive license terribly. What is a license that most (if not all) other publishers would kill to have, is something that has seen EA release games that have disappointed, while cancelling those that looked promising. Recently, it was revealed that the open world single player Star Wars title that had been in development at EA Vancouver had been cancelled, and that is something that hasn’t gone down well with a great number of people.

That includes Gary Whitta, co-writer of the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as well. Recently, on the Kinda Funny Games Daily Show (which you can view below), Whitta spoke about the game’s cancellation, and gave his own two cents on the matter- and he clearly wasn’t happy about the news. He mentioned that he’d seen a lot of the game in action himself, and that it looked “terrific”, also saying that EA have mismanaged the Star Wars license “catastrophically”.

“It has been catastrophically mismanaged,” said Whitta. “If I were Disney, I’d be ****ing furious. I saw a bunch of that game, and it looked terrific. It would have been Star Wars Uncharted.”

Given the track record that EA has had with Star Wars over the last few years, from the disastrous manner in which they screwed up Star Wars: Battlefront 2, to these cancellations, it’s no surprise to see people reacting this way.

EA, however, has clarified that it “remains committed” to making Star Wars games- in fact, the open world Star Wars game was reportedly cancelled so that resources could be shifted to another Star Wars project that was smaller in scope. Meanwhile, Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is due out later this year.
