PS4 On Pace To Hit 100 Million Units Quicker Than Wii, On Par With PS2

PS4 finds itself in hallowed company.

The PS4 is a monstrous success in just about every regard—the hardware is selling like water in a desert, and its services seem to be doing extraordinarily well too. The end result? The PS4 now finds itself in hallowed company. Speaking on Twitter, analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners confirmed that the PS4 is now on pace to hit global shipments of 100 million units far faster than the Wii did it. In fact, it is currently on pace with the PS2, which as I am sure everyone remembers, ended up being the bestselling console of all time.

It’s an extremely impressive feat. The Wii, of course, had explosive sales at first, but really slowed down towards the end, while the PS2 had an extraordinarily long life thanks to price cuts, and the PS3’s early failures. The PS4 has sold consistently, but will probably not enjoy a life as long as the PS2 did, since I can’t imagine the PS5 will stumble out of the gates, nor is Sony very willing to drop its price currently outside of isolated promotions.

But even in spite of this, I think we should find the console easily ending up with around 120 million units sold over its lifetime—a great result, and truly Sony’s comeback. Now to see if they manage to continue this momentum with the inevitable PS5.
