Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler has been an absolute success for Square Enix and Acquire. The developers announced today on Twitter that the game has sold 1.5 million units worldwide since its release last Summer; this is up from the 1.08 million we knew it had done back in January, and in spite of the chronic and severe shortages that plagued availability for it for weeks.

Acquire, the developers of the game, also confirmed today that they are working on a console-based follow-up (although it’s unclear whether this follow up is going to be an Octopath sequel, or a brand new IP). That said, they also said that the game will take some time to develop, and apologized for the wait.

Octopath Traveler was a great, accomplished throwback to classic 16-bit turn based RPGs that nonetheless suffered from some issues. Hopefully, any follow up to it will see the developers take the feedback regarding repetition in Octopath into account, because if they do, their next game could be a legitimate classic. Octopath Traveler itself is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
