The announcement of Cuphead for the Nintendo Switch yesterday was quite surprising and unexpected. While it had been rumored ahead of time, seeing a Microsoft supported game come to a Nintendo system still felt surreal. So for good measure, why not double down on that surreality and put Cuphead in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the latest instalment of the crossover fighting series from Nintendo?
That’s what Studio MDHR’s Jared Moldenhauer told Game Informer, in an interview following Cuphead’s reveal for Switch—that he would love to see the game’s characters in Smash, saying that Cuphead and Mughead belong in Smash, and basically asking fans to tell Nintendo if they would like to see those characters in the game.
“I’ve dreamed of Smash Bros. [Cuphead and Mugman] belong in there,” Moldenhauer said. “So basically if fans want it, I couldn’t see how Nintendo wouldn’t want the fans to get what they wanted. I think they would because they support their fans a lot . . . So if Nintendo was keeping their fans happy, then I’d be more than pleased to make that the easiest transition. Just a piece of paper, we don’t need anything. You can have those characters make an appearance.”
Of course, we have to on some level assume he was being cheeky with this statement; nonetheless, given that third party characters like Joker from Persona 5 are already coming to Smash, and that they are apparently indicative of the strategy Nintendo will use when choosing DLC characters for the game, maybe it’s not as unlikely as you might think.
