Shovel Knight Isn’t Over Yet, Says Yacht Club Games

The developer isn’t ready to bury the shovel wielder just yet.

Shovel Knight Showdown

When it comes to unlikely success stories, you’re not going to find one quite like 2014’s Shovel Knight. An indie platformer from a then-unknown small development team, the game rose at a rapid pace, eventually being released on just about every platform under the sun, seeing great sales and even getting its own amiibo. Thanks to that success, Yacht Club Games has even gotten into publishing themselves, with the upcoming Cyber Shadow. And it seems they aren’t done with the knight just yet.

In an interview with USGamer, Sean Velasco, designer for the studio, said there are still still plans for the franchise in works at Yacht Club. He didn’t go into any specific details, but promised they had some “weird” ideas for the franchise’s future, while talking about the joy they’ve experienced with the game’s success as it finishes up the Treasure Trove Saga, a series of expansions exploring other characters in Shovel Knight‘s world.

“I don’t think we’re there at that like emotional point yet because we’re still in the meat of trying to just get it out the door,” said Velasco. “Once it’s done and, you know, it’s like the nest is empty and we don’t have another thing to work on, then I imagine it’ll be really emotional. We’re all gonna take a lot of time off and just kind of rejigger ourselves before we jump into the next thing.

“But yeah I mean we’ll keep on keeping on. But Shovel Knight is not done. We’ve got a lot of weird ideas to make.”

Shovel Knight Showdown, a fighting offshoot of the series, and Shovel Knight: King of Cards, the final expansion for the base game, were both recently delayed. Read more on that through here.
