Rocket League

Boy, talk about some unexpected news. It was just announced today that Psyonix, the developer of the highly popular Rocket League has been acquired by Epic Games. The purchase comes with seemingly no indication of a deal being worked out between the two entities before this. How much Epic paid for the acquisition was not disclosed, though odds are it was a huge sum, considering the overall sales of the game, and its constant presence in the eSports scene.

According to The Verge, a statement was given to the media by Psyonix saying the game would be available on Steam up until the Epic Games Store release later this year, after which it would only be available on the EGS. A later statement given to US Gamer from Epic Games, however, said that there are no “announced” plans to remove the game from Steam, and that the game will remain on Valve’s storefront even after its release on the Epic Games Store. Whether or not this was due to a misunderstanding or a miscommunication, a backtrack due to an already vocal online backlash, or if it simply means plans will be announced in the future is unclear at this time.

Rocket League is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. We’ll keep you updated, particularly on the status of the PC version.
