Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a kart racing video game developed by Beenox and published by Activision. It is a remake of the 1999 PlayStation title Crash Team Racing, which was developed by Naughty Dog.

Development

Similar to Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, which was a remake of all three Crash Bandicoot platforming titles developed by Naughty Dog for the original PlayStation, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is also a remake of the original PlayStation kart racer.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was announced at The Game Awards in December of 2018, where it was confirmed that the game would be releasing for the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on June 21 of the following year. In March of 2019, it was confirmed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game would include exclusive content- namely, retro skins for Crash, Coco, and Cortex based on their original appearances in the 1999 Crash Team Racing, as well as low-poly retro karts and an additional retro track.

The developers also confirmed that they had no plans to support cross-platform play or cross-platform progression in the game. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled will also feature enhancements for the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X, and will run at 4K resolutions on both the enhanced consoles.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled also includes content from subsequent Crash Bandicoot kart racing titles, including from Vicarious Visions’ Crash Nitro Kart (which released in 2003), and from Radical Entertainment’s Crash Tag Team Racing (released in 2005). The game is remade and recreated from the ground up, using new assets, new features like online play, and new content.

Gameplay

Like the original title it is based on, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled sees players competing against other racers, all from the Crash Bandicoot series, to the finish line, while avoiding obstacles in the tracks and using power-ups scattered throughout the courses to get the upper hand over competitors.

All five modes originally seen in Crash Team Racing back in 1999 will be making a return in Nitro-Fueled. These include Time Trial, Adventure Mode, Arcade, Versus, and Battle. Adventure Mode is a full-fledged campaign that sees players progressing and unlocking new karts, areas, customizations, and boss fights. In Arcade Mode, players can either participate in quick races, or in grand prix tournaments.

Karts are also customizable in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Customizations include paint jobs, decals, wheels, kart body, and more. Customization components can be purchased using Wumpa Fruit, which is earned in the game’s Adventure Mode. Players can also equip several unique skins to all the characters, with some skins having special animations for specific events, like at the winner’s podium. Skins represent various titles in the series, including Crash Tag Team Racing, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and many others.

Crash Team Racing has a total of twenty three characters to choose from. Of these, all fifteen from the original Crash Team Racing return. These include- Crash Bandicoot, Coco Bandicoot, Doctor Neo Cortex, Doctor N. Gin, Polar, Pura, Tiny Tiger, Dingodile, Ripper Roo, Papu Papu, Komodo Joe, Pinstripe Potoroo, Fake Crash, and Doctor Nefarious Tropy. Nitros Oxide, who was a boss character in the original Crash Team Racing but was not playable, is also being added as a playable character in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.

Eight characters from Crash Nitro Kart are also being added, including most of the boss characters that appear in that game. These include Crunch Bandicoot, Zem, Zam, “Real” Emperor Velo XXVII, Krunk, Geary, and Nash. Of all the characters in the game’s roster- the following will be unlockables- Ripper Roo, Papu Papu, Komodo Joe, Pinstripe Potoroo, Fake Crash, Doctor Nefarious Tropy, Nitros Oxide, Crunch Bandicoot, Zem, and Zam. Four of these – namely, Nitros Oxide, Zem, Zam, and Crunch Bandicoot – will already be unlocked in the game’s Nitros Oxide Edition.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled will also feature over thirty tracks, including all tracks from the original Crash Team Racing, as well as tracks from Crash Nitro Kart. One track, namely Retro Track, will be exclusive to the PS4 version of the game. The tracks returning from the original Crash Team Racing are- Crash Cove, Mystery Caves, Slide Coliseum, Turbo Tracks, Papu’s Pyramid, Blizzard Bluff, Hot Air Skyway, Oxide Station, Polar Pass, Dragon Mines, Tiny Arena, Cortex Castle, N. Gin Labs, Dingo Canyon, Sewer Speedway, Roo’s Tubes, Tiger Temple, and Coco Park.

The battle arenas returning from Crash Team Racing are- Parking Lot, Skull Rock, The North Bowl, Nitro Court, Rocky Road, Rampage Ruins, and Lab Basement. From Crash Nitro Kart, the battle arenas that are included in Nitro-Fueled are- Frozen Frenzy, Magnetic Mayhem, Temple Turmoil, Terra Drome, and Desert Storm.
