Apparently, in handheld mode, the touchscreen is required.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest games of the year will be Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker 2. The sequel to the Mario platformer/builder hybrid is primed to be one of their most anticipated releases, and people are ready to build all manner of fun levels. But if you’re wanting to build on the go, be prepared to use your own personal touch, literally.

In a hands-on preview of the game via Kotaku, it was revealed that whenever the game enters handheld mode in building mode, you will be forced to use the touchscreen. While it’s true that the touchscreen was required in the original game (which released on the Wii U, and then later the 3DS), it’s a rather bizarre situation here, since you can use builder mode in TV mode obviously without the touch screen. It could be different in the final build, of course, or get patched in later like the lack of ability to play online co-op with friends will be. Still, Nintendo can be an odd duck sometimes.

Super Mario Maker 2 releases on June 28th for the Switch. Check out some interesting facts about the game as you wait in the meantime.
