Pokemon Snap Sequel Hasn’t Happened Because Game Freak Couldn’t Find “Unique Twist”

Obviously the big Pokemon focus right now is the upcoming Sword and Shield, the next mainline entry in the long running series. There’s also the multiple mobile games that the series is going for. There’s a variety of games right now, not to mention a major Hollywood film, but there’s always been one entry that many have wondered about: Pokemon Snap. The game was a simple concept, putting you in a Pokemon Safari where you had to snap the best pictures of Pokemon in various landscapes. The game was a smash hit on the Nintendo 64, but there has never been a follow up in any direct or indirect way since. And now, longtime Pokemon Producer Junichi Masuda says the simple truth is they just couldn’t find a unique way to do it.

In an interview with Metro, Masuda spoke at length about several upcoming Pokemon projects. He was asked about why Pokemon Snap never got a follow up, despite being a huge success and having systems like the Wii U and 3DS that would seemingly be a perfect fit for the concept. His answer was short and sweet saying they needed “a very unique twist” to consider doing another, with that being the big reason why no followup ever came about.

It’s not as if anyone is wanting for Pokemon material, but Snap was always unique in and of itself, being a sort of video game zen garden. Maybe one day we’ll end up with a sequel or similarly styled spinoff, but it doesn’t seem Game Freak is in a big hurry to make one.
