Assassin's Creed Odyssey - The Fate of Atlantis

While Assassin’s Creed Origins started the franchise down a very different path, it was really Odyssey that shifted gears hard on things and turned the series into much more of an action RPG. It’s been quite the journey with that game, and the journey is coming to an end with the final episode of the second DLC pack that will drop next week. The game’s writer, Stephen Rhodes, looked back at the game as it ends, and the thing that stuck out most about writing it was the simple concept of family conflict.

In a lengthy interview with Game Savvy, Rhodes talks extensively about his career, the differences between writing for games as opposed to other mediums and a reflection on his work in Odyssey. When talking about what his favorite part of writing the game, he said it was digging into the various family conflicts that drives the game’s long narrative, and the joy of getting to see mo-cap actors bring the script to life.

“I think on Assassin’s Creed, because that’s the latest thing I’ve worked on, I was really proud of my writing of the relationship with the main protagonist and the relationship with their father, Nikolaos, and your stepbrother, Stentor,” said Rhodes. “I feel like I put a lot of myself into those characters and you get really emotional confrontations with them and I was really proud with how they turned out. When I went with the narrative director to mocap (motion capture) those scenes and see them brought to life by the actors, everyone was really moved by the performances. It was a really humbling moment for me. Unfortunately, everyone seems to really want to talk about the old nymphomaniac lady that I worked on, so I guess people aren’t that into the heartfelt emotional stuff. So I’m proud of that quest line because people seem to think it was pretty funny.”

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The first episode of the Fate of Atlantis DLC will release on July 16th
