Gods and Monsters

At the end of its E3 2019 presser, Ubisoft revealed a brand new IP in development – Gods and Monsters. It appeared to be a mix of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda with a heavier focus on Greek mythology. Not too much was said about the project, save for the leak that painted it as a “small-scale RPG”.

However, a recent interview on the UbiBlog with creative director Jonathan Dumont and senior producer Marc-Alexis Côté finally gave us something tangible. Gods and Monsters is an open world action title with a lighthearted tone, essentially. Dumont said, “The narrator, Homer, is telling his grandchildren this story, but his grandkids are interrupting and asking questions along the way. Mythology has a good sense of humor, oftentimes, so there are certain instances where we like to poke fun at things.”

Though Dumont enjoyed the process of developing the world of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the desire to go completely in the mythological direction was strong. “During production, we started thinking, ‘what if we made something that’s 100% mythology? We could make a dramatically different game than we did before.'”

However, much like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you can modify the main character Fenyx’s abilities, armour, and overall appearance. He’ll have some interesting moves, like double-umping, which can be used to reach the height of certain enemies, like the Cyclops, to bring them down to Earth. There will also be “resource and stamina” management, which seems to indicate limits to certain moves.

Gods and Monsters is out on February 25th, 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Google Stadia. Stay tuned for more details (and hopefully gameplay) in the coming months.
