When it comes down to discussions on the next generation hardware, it’s always falling into the camp that’s talking about the PlayStation 5 and next Xbox, dubbed Project Scarlett for now. But Sony is actually working on two next generation systems in reality. Not another handheld (sorry Vita fans), but the company’s VR platform. Recently revealed patents show us possibly the first glimpses of it.

In a slew of new patent material, we see that Sony is potentially thinking about a wireless headset of some kind for the PS VR 2. To combat nauseousness, an issue some still have with VR, it’s said to use acceleration and gyro sensors to detect how users tilt their heads to better guess what they’re looking at on-screen. The patents also mention using a new graphics rendering technology called Foveated Rendering that will help cut down on the GPU loading times and only supply high-quality graphics to the parts of an image a gamer is most likely to be looking at. You can read through the entire patent here.

Sony has mentioned in the past that its possible the next VR headset will come in multiple models, so what we’re seeing here could possibly be just one of two, or more, possibilities. We probably won’t see the next generation headset until well after the PS5 launches, but it should be something when it does finally get unveiled.
