The Division 2 Is 2019’s Best-Selling Game So Far

Global sales for Ubisoft's looter shooter have been impressive.

The Division 2’s performance in terms of sales has seemingly been a bit mixed since it launched. Though it topped sales charts in the weeks following its release, it was reported that its physical launch sales in the UK were only 20 per cent as much as the first The Divisionand though the game’s sales via Uplay were ten times as much as its predecessor, Ubisoft reported that its sales on consoles had fallen below expectations.

All of that, it seems, has ultimately had very little bearing on the game’s commercial performance, because Ubisoft revealed in their latest quarterly financial report that The Division 2 is the highest selling global video game release of 2019 so far, taking into considering figures from the NPD, Gkf, Famitsu, and Ubisoft’s own estimates, accounting for multiple regions throughout the world. The company also revealed (via Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter) that the game has enjoyed “record highs” for engagement per player and season pass attach rate.

During their conference, Ubisoft also revealed that PC has become their most profitable platform, where they see the highest amount of sales, and The Division 2’s high sales via Uplay, and its overall high sales in spite of lower-than-expected console sales, certainly fall in line with that statement.

While it isn’t surprising that The Division 2 has sold well, the fact that it’s the highest selling release of the year so far is still an impressive achievement, especially when you consider some of the other new releases we’ve seen in 2019 that this has managed to beat, including the likes of Kingdom Hearts 3, Resident Evil 2, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Mortal Kombat 11, Days Gone, and more.

The Division 2 is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and will be receiving its first major expansion later this month. Recently, the game’s director also expressed interest in possibly making a single player story-driven spinoff to the series.
