Last year’s Spider-Man turned out to be a massive, massive success for Sony. With its brilliant web-swinging gameplay, fluid combat, and excellent take on the beloved character, it was loved by nearly everyone who played it, and that, combined with the fact that it was based on one of the most instantly recognizable properties in the world across all media, led to the game seeing impressive sales on the market as well.

Where previously our benchmark for a good superhero game was the similarly excellent Batman: Arkham series of games developed by Rocksteady and WB Montreal, we now have another contender to vie for the throne of best superhero game to date. But while that is an entirely subjective matter, it seems that at least in terms of sales, there’s one very clear winner.

In celebration of the beginning of San Diego Comic-Con, Mat Piscatella of the NPD Group put up a tweet in which he listed out the highest selling superhero games of all time in the United States, and revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man has overtaken Batman: Arkham City to take the perch of the list. Arkham Knight comes in at third place, while Arkham Asylum is at ninth, while the classic Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are also in there. A couple of LEGO games and both the Injustice titles are also in there.

What’s worth noting here is that of all these games, Spider-Man is the only exclusive title, being available only on the PS4, while all the others have released on multiple platforms. Goes to show just how massively successful Insomniac’s open world title has been.

Spider-Man is still alive and kicking, too. It recently received two new costumes as free DLC. Meanwhile, those with a hankering to replay the Arkham titles can do so with the upcoming Batman: Arkham Collection– at least if you’re in Europe.
