GreedFall Aims To Fill Void Of BioWare RPGs, Says Developer

Spiders hopes the game will fill a spot that's been left vacant with BioWare's current direction.

The latest game from legendary studio Bioware was Anthem, and well, it didn’t have the start that many hoped. While time will only tell if they can manage to salvage the project, it was a very different direction for the studio regardless. Once known for their in-depth RPGs with tons of narrative paths and not so black and white choices (as well as very black and white choices, too), it’s something many have missed. Someone who missed it big time is developer Spiders, and they hope their next game, GreedFall, will fill that void.

Speaking with Escapist Magazine, Spiders CEO Jehanne Rousseau said that the game and company wasn’t looking to replace BioWare, but they definitely see it as something that will fill the void of games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect that the company no longer works on. They hope GreedFall can capture what made people love those types of story-driven RPGs to begin with.

“We are creating them now not to replace [BioWare] but to fill the void in some ways,” Rousseau said. “We can’t really compare. We don’t have the same size teams and budget, but we really try to continue creating games we love. We hope that players will like it and that players that enjoyed playing story-driven RPGs like the games from BioWare will enjoy playing GreedFall.”

Spiders was recently acquired by publisher Bigben Interactive, so maybe budget concerns won’t be as much of an issue in the future if GreedFall manages to take off when it releases September 10th. Hopefully, it will do what the studio wants and make for a good title in the vein of those kind of RPGs we’ve been lacking over the years.
