Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer on Switch Version: “Never Say Never”

Larian Studios' Swen Vincke says it might be "a bit problematic" on current Switch hardware.

Baldur's Gate 3

Larian Studios’ pulled off some technical wizardry to bring Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition to the Nintendo Switch. With the studio developing Baldur’s Gate 3, which is bound for Google Stadia and PC, what are the chances of a Switch version for the same? It ultimately depends on the next iteration of the platform as per Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke.

Speaking on Nintendo Voice Chat, Vincke said, “I honestly don’t know. I don’t know what the next Switches are gonna look like. On this particular Switch, that might be a bit problematic. There are quite a lot of upgrades that have been done on BG3, so I think it would be very, very hard. But then again, never say never.

“You never know. Maybe we’ll figure out some magic trick and it’ll work. I just hope personally as a fan the next Switch will have triple the power and triple the battery life. It’s an amazing device. I just hope it has a very long life with lots of upgrades that we can keep on playing all the games we’re playing on other consoles when we’re on the go.”

Larian Studios tends to focus on PC before starting development on console versions of a game. This was seen with Divinity: Original Sin 2, which launched on Steam Early Access in September 2016. It would release in September 2017 for PC and wouldn’t be announced for Xbox One and PS4 until 2018 alongside the Definitive Edition. The Nintendo Switch version only recently released.

So even if Switch hardware manages to catch up, it may be some time before Baldur’s Gate 3 is ported over. Still, given that Beamdog’s enhanced ports of the first two titles are available for the platform, we’re hopeful of having the entire trilogy in our hands. Settle in for the long haul – it’ll be a while before Baldur’s Gate 3 releases.
