Samurai Shodown Producer Talks Challenges Of Switch And Stadia Versions

The company had to overcome some challenges for upcoming ports of the fighter.

The revival of the Samurai Shodown franchise has been quite the success, both critically and financially. As of now it’s only available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but more versions are coming soon. Recently, the producer of the game talked about some of the challenges in bringing the game to certain platforms- specifically the Switch and Stadia. 

While speaking with Twinfinite, Yasuyuki Oda talked about upcoming ports of the fighter. Probably the biggest challenge for the team, as per him, was getting the game to run at a smooth 60 FPS on the Switch hardware, the version that’s slated to come out at the end of the year.

“It was definitely hard,” said Oda. “It’s very different hardware from everything else. We were already kind of pushing the limits even with PS4 with the stages and everything.

“A lot of work went into it but it was definitely a priority from the beginning because it’s a very competitive fighting game and frame rate is key.

“We made sure to take care and that the art style stayed intact but keeping the priority as much as possible on performance.”

The game is also coming to Google’s Stadia. The streaming service posed its own set of challenges, particularly with things like bandwidth and latency. Oda said they wouldn’t know for sure how well it runs until the game releases on Stadia due to the nature of the service, but they are confident they have that version up and running properly.

“It’s always hard to say until something launches because that’s when all the issues come out, but from our side, we’re very confident in it,” he said. “Now it hasn’t been released yet, so possible bandwidth issues aren’t going to crop up until launch, but we’re not worried about it honestly. We think that Google has a nice infrastructure and they’re really serious about it.”

Samurai Shodown is available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is also slated to come out on Switch, PC, and Stadia later, with the Switch version has been slated to come out December 12th in Japan, and the PC and Stadia versions coming at an as-of-yet unspecified time.
