Disintegration’s Story Tone Is Inspired By Joss Whedon’s Firefly

Expect a lot of quips, I would imagine.

Disintegration is a game coming next year that has quite the pedigree. The game has one of the co-creators of Halo behind it, and is a unique blend of shooter and RTS elements. Despite starting development as a spiritual successor to Myth, the game also has another influence that may surprise you. Specifically, its story is inspired by a Joss Whedon cult classic.

In talking with the PlayStation Blog, Director Marcus Lehto broke down several aspects of the game. When talking about the story, and the campaign reveal trailer’s somewhat surprising tone, he named dropped Firefly, hoping that they can recapture the kind of fun, human element in that show. According to him, “I wanted them to behave like normal humans, with a variety of different backgrounds and opposing views… we want that more complex nature to show when it comes to their banter and their interactions.”

If you aren’t familiar with the show, it follows a group of people in the far future as they make a living as smugglers. Like a lot of Whedon’s work, it’s known for its quirky humor and naturalistic banter between characters. It’s an interesting one to cite as influence, and it’ll be more interesting to see how it translates to the game when it launches next year. Firefly was also an infamous flop and was canceled before all produced episodes of the show even got to air, so let’s hope Disintegration doesn’t follow that fate, though.
