The PS3 was a system that was notoriously hard to develop for, and as a result, often saw inferior versions of multiplatform titles released for it. The PS4, in response to the PS3’s Cell processor’s issues, instead decided to go with a more developer-friendly approach, building its specs around PC hardware, and the results were instantly apparent, with developers finding the system much easier to make games for.
That’s a direction the PS5 is heading in as well, with its custom AMD Zen 2 processor. And apparently, as per PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, developers and publishers across the industry have been very satisfied with the results, and are finding the console easier to code for than an other PlayStation system has been in the past.
“One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we’re hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they’ve had on any other PlayStation platform,” said Ryan while speaking with GamesIndustry.
We know now that the PS5 will be out in Holiday 2020, and though we’re yet to see any official announcements of games for the system, we can probably expect to hear about some of them in the coming months. Sony says the console will be unveiled in full next year, while reports have suggested that a PlayStation Meeting will be taking place in February 2020, so perhaps we don’t have to wait too long.
