2019 may not have been the generation-defining year for the PS4 that 2018 was, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been a steady and solid stream of excellent releases for Sony’s console over the past dozen months. From remakes to new IPs, from virtual reality games to anticipated sequels, from smaller, unique titles to new entries in massive properties, 2019 has seen a little bit of everything come out for the PS4.

With the year coming to an end, here we’ll be recognizing the best of the best, listing out our nominees for the best PS4 games of 2019, before concluding with what we felt stood above all others in that group of games. Without further ado then, let’s get started.

NOTE: The nominees and winner were decided by an internal vote held among the entire GamingBolt staff.

THE NOMINEES:

SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE

Sekiro Shadows Die Twice_02

FromSoftware have been on fire this past decade, releasing one excellent game after the other as they constantly build on the successful formula they established with Demon’s Souls all the way back in 2009. This year’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was a brand new IP, and introduced some interesting changes to the Soulslike formula- but it still delivered everything you’d expect from a FromSoftware game. Excellent combat, gruelling difficulty, memorable boss fights, impeccable level design. Sekiro isn’t a game that the masses might be able to enjoy, owing to its very nature, but those who did enjoy it will attest to what a thrilling experience it was.
