A Plague Tale: Innocence was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. A solid playing adventure game with a fairly well written story helped show the revival of the mid-range budget titles we’ve been experiencing. It seems we could be doing it again, too, as rumors of a sequel have emerged.

The original rumor came from XboxSquad, a French website that claims that developer Asobo Studios is working on a sequel that will potentially be revealed next year with a planned release date sometime in early 2022, contrary to what the developers themselves have said on the matter in the past. Eurogamer reached out to publisher Focus Home Interactive about the rumor, and they confirmed they and Asobo are working on another project but did not specify what it was.

“Focus Home Interactive and Asobo are very proud of the critical and public reception of A Plague Tale: Innocence, and the sales. We’re delighted to have received a solid number of awards and nominations, including for Best Narrative at the Game Awards next week. We want to pursue our efforts to make sure the game gets even more attention from players and we will thus keep promoting that title as it deserves.

“Of course, we announced last year we are partnering with Asobo for a future project but never confirmed if it was a sequel to A Plague Tale or not – and will give more details on that title when the right time comes.”

We know the game was a commercial success for the publisher, and the story is left somewhat open at the game’s end, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see a sequel in some form. Considering the rumored time frame, it’ll most likely be a next gen project as well, which means even more hordes of rats. Whatever Asobo is working on, hopefully we’ll see it soon.
