Cyberpunk 2077 Developer Disputes Rumored Reason For Delay

The alleged rumor about Xbox One performance seems to be untrue.

While there’s a lot of very big games coming out this year, Cyberpunk 2077 has a chance to be one that stands above all. The game was originally slated to come out in just a few months in April, but suffered a delay to September. Rumors floated around that a large part of the reason for the delay was poor performance in the Xbox One version of the game. Now it seems one of the developers has poured cold water on that theory.

God of War director Cory Balrog recently tweeted a response to an article about the rumor, saying it actually was common for a game to be running very poorly on any system before the final push to gold (here’s a link to the tweet). Balrog is pretty accomplished, but if his word isn’t quite enough for you, on the official CDPR forums developer Benzenzimmern backed up the claim.

“Cory Barlog hit the nail on the head,” they wrote. “Of course we’re optimizing for the Xbox One, and for the Playstation, and for the PC, because that’s what you do in the last stretches of game development. While the game is made, lots of things are unoptimized, because they’re all in flux, changing, and still not finished.

“So simple answers like ‘They delayed the game because of X’ might make for a good rumor, but don’t hold a lot of truth. There’s always many reasons. Among them, and I can speak for myself, simply fixing bugs, so the game is as polished as possible. No hidden agendas, just working on making the game better.”

So, in the end, it seems the game just needed more time in the oven and no specific system was the issue. The developer says the wait will be worth it in the end, though, regardless of the system you’ll be playing the game on come September 17th.
