"DOOM Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or mobile game," says creative director Hugo Martin.

Id Software’s DOOM Eternal has been looking more and more scintillating over the past few weeks. Even if you haven’t seen the gameplay (which you really should), just the idea of a personal fortress to hang out in or a 22 hour playtime is great. Thankfully, it seems all of this is being made possible without an in-game store.

This is according to creative director Hugo Martin, who stated in a Facebook comment (see below) that there is “No store,” he said. “Nothing you can unlock in Eternal with XP has anything to do with player abilities or content that would impact your game in any way. The only thing you can unlock with XP is COSMETICS. These cosmetics have no impact on how you play, they just look cool.”

He went on to note, “Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or mobile game – we are giving you a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect. Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff or you can completely ignore it and it will have no impact on your experience AT ALL and it’s all free.”

The clarification is all the more important, considering that several recent Bethesda-published titles – like RAGE 2 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood – had microtransactions. While both titles offered only cosmetics for real money, they were still stuffed to the brim with the same. That DOOM Eternal is avoiding this route is good news but you have to wonder what the catch could be.

We’ll have to wait in the meantime. DOOM Eternal is coming to Xbox One, PS4, PC and Google Stadia on March 20th 2020. The Nintendo Switch version is still in the works, despite not having a release date.
